The Mad Detective aka Sun Taam

Inspector Chan Bun (Ching Wan Lau) was a great detective.  Unfortunately, he loses his job when he cuts off his ear and gives it to his boss as a retirement present.  Inspector Ho (Andy On) is investigating a case on Inspector Wong (Kwok-Lun Lee) who disappeared while chasing a thief into the woods.  Several weeks after his disappearance an outbreak of armed robberies and murders are committed with Inspector Wong’s gun.  When inspector Ho can not come up with any leads he asks Bun to help him solve this case.  After witnessing Bun’s unique style of investigating, inspector Ho realizes that his mentor is truly mad.

I heard about this movie on G4 and had been wanting to watch it for a long time.  Finally, I got my hands on a copy and I sat down to watch this movie.  For the most part I understood what was going on but I feel like I missed something.  Unfortunately, I was interrupted a few times during my viewing but I will watch this movie again because I really liked this movie.  Hopefully when I watch this movie again I will fill this void that makes me feel like I have missed something important.

The movie starts of briefly showing inspector Bun reenacting some cases and solving them.  Nothing too bad, I will have to admit it was kinda strange when Bun climbed into a suitcase and asked another detective to kick him down the stairs.  That shows that he has dedication to his job.  Then we get to the Chief’s (Eddy Ko) retirement party.  Before I go off about how disturbing this scene is, I thought it was a little silly that the Chief had a Pomeranian.  I’m sorry, but if I were a detective and my Chief had a Pomeranian with him at his retirement party I would have to quit, or die of a laughter overdose.  Anyway, so everyone is giving the Chief gifts and congratulating him on his retirement when Bun walks up.  Everyone stops to look at him as to say “What is this psycho going to do now?”  He proceeds to cut his ear off.   Towards the end he has a little trouble so he just rips it off probably three fourths of the way down.  Then he tries to give it to the Chief.  It was pretty gross.  The funny thing is I was waiting for the Pomeranian to eat the ear, but that never happened. 🙁  Sure the guy has some problems, but if the guy is good at his job couldn’t you overlook his oddities and keep him around?  It must take a high level of respect to cut off a body part and give it to someone.  Maybe the Chief listened to Bun a lot, so to return the favor Bun gives him his ear.

I felt that the acting in this movie was fairly good, and I really liked the story.  The only reason that I feel that I may have missed something is because of the ending.  I might be trying to over analyze the ending though, but I think this movie is worth watching again.  If you are like detective movies I would recommend watching this movie.  I give The Mad Detective 4 severed ears out of 5.

  1. It is no secret that I am a huge fan of movies that make no sense, and don’t even being to explain stupid moves. But when some guy just randomly lops off his ear thinking it would make a good “spur of the moment” gift and the gesture has no real bearing on the movie otherwise, even I would turn it off.

Unless the pom ate the ear. Then I would HAVE to watch it.

  2. I think the main reason that he cut off his ear in the beginning was to set the tone of his character. He is depicted as being this psycho and what better way to to show it then cutting your own ear off.

  3. I’ve been meaning to watch this one for a long time now. It’s gotten pretty excellent reviews across the board. I’ll get to it one of these days, glad you liked it. 😉
