Puppet Master 5
Puppet Master 5 - the Final Chapter, isn't the last movie in the series, but it does essentially end the initial Andre Toulon storyline. In fact there are now 5 more movies which use the Puppet Master name, the most recent being released in July, 2010. I've had a great time with the first four, each one adds it's own mark to the series, but PM5 is the first actual continuation in the series from the previous movie. It takes place just a few days after the events of PM4, so you definitely need to see that one first or at least read my review.
Rick is being charged with the deaths of Cam, and both members of the Omega team he was working with. So of course his explanation of demon puppets who came to life and killed them all doesn't fly so well with the cops. They do however have a lot of interest in the puppet they found at the Inn which has some internal mechanics, Blade. They have confiscated him as part of the investigation, but we all know Blade isn't going to take this lying down... haha! Rick is able to make bail with some help from the new director of Omega, Dr. Jennings. He tries to explain what happened that night, but while Jennings seems skeptical, he is interested in getting a hold of the dolls while Rick heads back to Suzie's place for some much needed rest.
Jennings decides to get a few flunkies to search the Inn, which had been closed by the police. Meanwhile, Lord Sutek is working on his greatest creation, a demon doll that has his powers. It just seems to take quite a long time to do that as he is chanting and summoning for what seems like half the movie. Lauren, Suzie's psychic friend who was traumatized from the previous demon dolls is now in a hospital and she can see the other side where Sutek is planning his revenge. Thankfully she has learned how to communicate through a computer and when Rick heads back to the Inn with Blade he gets some strange messages over his terminal. He doesn't know it's Lauren initially, but he still listens to the messages he receives from the computer and from Toulon. Rick must now gather up the puppets, restart Decapitron, and finish off Sutek once and for all!
While the majority of the movie was pretty slow and tame, the final battle between Sutek and Toulon's puppets was the best of all the movies. Blade, Pinhead, Tunneler, Torch, Jester, Six-Shooter and Decapitron all make an appearance and contribute to the final outcome. It was a good way to wrap things up, but I couldn't help but think most of this could have been accomplished by adding another 45 minutes to PM4. Still, I understand marketing and getting the most bang for your buck so another 70 minutes of Puppet Master isn't all bad. One day I may finish watching the last 5 movies, but as for now I am very satisfied by the initial 5 and how things played out. Puppet Master 5 gets 2.5 soul sucking demon dolls out of 5!
