With the passing of Corey Haim on March 10th, we have decided that we’d like to pay a little tribute in our own way to Mr. Haim’s stellar career. First up on our agenda is 1996 film Demolition High, directed by none other than b-movie god, Jim Wynorski. In Demolition High, Haim plays Lenny Slater, a new student at Mayfield High school who hasn’t been able to fit in. He’s from the mean streets of Brooklyn, but he didn’t bargain for his school getting overrun by terrorists on his first day.

Back in 1991, the arcade game Street Fighter II was probably the biggest thing going in video games. I remember taking $5 every couple days up to my local arcade “The Red Baron” and pounding every single quarter into that machine, trying to figure out and master the special moves for each character. The one character that really drew my attention was Guile, the American Special Ops soldier who had a mean blonde flattop haircut (I had a flattop too, so I thought this was super rad). I’m sure my daily $5 addiction helped fuel the millions upon millions of dollars that both the arcade games and each iteration of the console version of the game put on Capcom’s (the company that made SFII) bottom line. And in 1994, it eventually convinced them that their game was popular enough cross over from nerdy obsession (like mine), to big budget Hollywood live action movie called Street Fighter. Unfortunately, they probably made arguably one of the worst movies based on a video game that the world would ever see.

I’ve been seeing the trailer for Black Dynamite for what seems like decades. But maybe it’s just that it’s based in the 70’s and the trailer has actually been showing on the Internet for almost 2 years. Ever since we saw it me and my buddies were hooked! I was a huge fan of Grindhouse and this was another one of those type movies, a period piece so to speak that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Michael Jai White plays the title character and reminds me of Jim Kelly in Black Belt Jones. In fact if you are a fan of that movie or other Blaxploitation movies like it you don’t even need to read this review, just go see this flick, I promise you won’t be disappointed!
