"Recovered Footage" horror movies are seemingly becoming more and more popular in the last few years (The Last Exorcism, Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project, etc.). Posing themselves as documentary footage, they are usually pretty effective at capturing the realism of the event, and they provide us with a first hand account of what the characters are going through during each particular event of the film. [REC] is another in that line of film making, and it proves itself to be very effective at scaring your friggin pants off.
Night of the Comet
In 1986, Halley's Comet fever was erupting all across America. People set up viewing parties to watch the comet come by for the first time in 75 years. In 1984, however, Night of the Comet was released into theaters, and maybe it was foreshadowing events that might happen when Halley's version passed us by.
The Dead Next Door
A zombie outbreak has ravaged the nation for roughly 3 years. A serum created by Dr. Bow which was supposed to give limited life to dead cells instead entirely reanimated dead humans! The Zombie Squad has been commissioned by the government to track down the original spread of the plague to see if they can produce a cure. They must travel to Akron, Ohio where Bow's research is, and where the spread of the virus began. But when one of their own is infected, Raimi and the others need to put a rush on things to save their Zombie Squad buddy, Mercer!
Zombie (aka Zombi 2)
An opening shot of a man shooting a gun at what appears to be a body tied up in a canvas bag and a single line of dialog - "The boat can leave now, tell the crew" is the only clue Lucio Fulci provides you before the title of Zombie. Next we know, that boat is sailing aimlessly into the New York harbor, where some Coast Guard officers find what's left of the crew - a lone decaying zombie - and it's got a hankerin' for some fresh flesh.
